  • Is online training as effective as in-person training?

These online training courses can be just as effective as hands on training. Online training allows you to learn at your own pace and on your own schedule, and it provides access to the same information as an in-person course. To get the best out of the courses we suggest to complete the course without an acompanying handpiece, then complete the course with a handpiece. We also recommend purchasing the monthly subscription for email tech support. However, for those who prefer hands-on training with the handpieces and an instructor, we have both in person or Zoom virtual style courses available. We offer hands-on training courses at www.orionrepair.com or you can email Paul at [email protected] for more information on them. They can provide students with the opportunity to practice their skills and get feedback from an instructor in real-time. Both online and in-person training have their own benefits and can be effective depending on the individual's learning style and preferences.

Frequently Asked Questions

More Detailed Questions

  • What types of handpieces will be covered in the course?

During the training courses the following handpieces are used: NSK X95L; Kavo 25LPA; Sirona C200L Mini; W&H Adec WA99LT 3 Notch Cap New Model. Each course is brand-specific, meaning it will focus on a specific brand of handpieces. For example, if the course is focused on NSK handpieces, it will use a model that has a repair process that is representative of other NSK electric handpiece models. If you want to learn to repair a broad range of electric handpieces, we suggest taking all 4 of our electric handpiece repair courses. There are two types of internal motor designs in electric handpieces. Some electrics have internal motor designs like Kavo and NSK which are also similar to Star, Brasseler and other models, while others have similar designs as W&H and Sirona. By taking all 4 courses, you will have a well-rounded understanding of how to repair a variety of electric handpieces. Alternatively, if you're looking to focus on just two courses, we would suggest Course 2-Kavo and Course 4-W&H to show both internal motor designs. The Kavo course will cover the internal motor designs that are commonly found in Kavo and NSK handpieces, while the W&H course will cover the internal motor designs that are commonly found in W&H and Sirona handpieces. However, for the best learning experience, we suggest taking the courses in order from Course 1 to Course 4.

  • Will the course cover advanced repairs or just basic maintenance?

These are repair-focused training courses, meaning that they will cover advanced repairs. The courses are designed to provide detailed instruction on how to repair various types of electric handpieces. The courses will not cover basic maintenance such as lubrication or cleaning since these are already covered by the handpiece manufacturers. Instead, it focuses on repairing electric handpieces rather than handpiece maintenance.

  • Will the course cover repairs for multiple brands and do you recommend a certain order to take the courses?

The courses will cover the skills and knowledge needed to perform the repair of electric handpieces. Electrics have two internal motor designs, a bow style and a non bow style. We would suggest to take the NSK course 1 first followed by the Kavo course 2, then to take the Sirona course 3 followed by the W&H course 4. For the best learning experience, we suggest taking the courses in order from Course 1 to Course 4.

  • Will I need to purchase any specialized tools or equipment for the course?

You are not required to purchase any specialized repair tools or equipment for the courses, however, repair tool sets are available for each course. These tool sets match the repair tools that are used in the training courses. They consist of two sets: the first tool set, Press and Test Equipment, includes needed items such as a press, press pins and various test equipment. This first tool set is needed for every course, and it only needs to be purchased once and can be used for all of the training courses. It includes specialty test equipment for electric handpiece repairs such as an RPM Tester, a Retention Strength Pull Tester, an Electric Test Control Unit and a Thermocoupler Test Unit. In addition, it also includes a Arbor Press, Universal Press Block and various Press Pins. The second tool set is brand-specific and includes the specialty repair tools used for the NSK, Kavo, Sirona, and W&H repair training courses. This second tool set is specific to each training course for the brand of handpiece you will be repairing. These two specialty electric dental handpiece repair tool sets would be very difficult to source individually.

The course will provide detailed instructions on how to repair the specific brand and type of handpiece, including videos, diagrams, and step-by-step instructions. However, to get the most out of the course and to be able to apply the knowledge to real-world scenarios, we would recommend following through the course once or twice without a handpiece, so you can get familiar with the concepts, procedures and terminology. After that, we recommend completing the course again using a handpiece to follow through the repair steps and practice the skills you have learned. This way you can apply the knowledge to a real handpiece and will be able to troubleshoot and repair the handpiece with more confidence.

  • How is the best way to get the most out of these courses?

Our recommendation for making the most out of these electric handpiece repair courses is to read through each course first reviewing all of the step-by-step directions, pictures, and videos. It's important to have a solid understanding of each repair step before attempting to repair an electric dental handpiece. Next, after reading through the course materials, we suggest using a similar model electric dental handpiece to follow along with the repair course completing each step with a handpiece. Then, after completing all the repair steps with the handpiece, follow through the course to complete each of the testing steps to be sure the handpiece is operating correctly, troubleshooting as necessary. We suggest to practice this repair again using the step by steps in the repair course. It's important to practice the repair process until you are comfortable with each step. This will help reinforce your knowledge and build your confidence in repairing electric dental handpieces. We suggest taking the courses in order from Course 1 to Course 4 for the best learning experience.
